Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy

Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove ovarian cysts while preserving the ovary. It is the preferred approach for most benign ovarian cysts, offering excellent outcomes with minimal disruption to the patient's life.

What are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovaries. While many resolve on their own, some require surgical removal when they are large, persistent, causing symptoms, or suspected to be abnormal.

Indications for Surgery

  • Cysts larger than 5–6 cm that don't resolve
  • Endometriomas (chocolate cysts)
  • Dermoid cysts (teratomas)
  • Cysts causing pelvic pain or pressure
  • Suspected abnormal or complex cysts
  • Cyst torsion (twisting of the ovary)

Benefits of Laparoscopic Approach

  • Ovary is preserved whenever possible
  • Minimal blood loss and scarring
  • Short hospital stay (same day or overnight)
  • Quick recovery — return to normal activities in 1–2 weeks
  • Reduced risk of adhesions compared to open surgery

Post-Operative Care

Patients are monitored post-surgery and discharged with clear instructions. Follow-up ultrasound is scheduled to confirm complete removal and ovarian health.
